It’s a badly kept secret that the Lowcountry has tarpon. Sure, it aint sight fishing for big floating mirrors in the backcountry or chained up ocean side migrators, but that doesn’t stop some folks from being just a bit, shall we say, protective of the fishery. Enter the Poonapple—part fish, part fruit. Long a symbol of prosperity, wealth and hospitality, pineapples adorn doors, gates and other elements of Charleston architecture. There’s even a painting of Charleston’s namesake, Charles II, receiving the first pineapple grown in England in 1675. So, if you like pooña coladas and gettin’ caught in the rain, consider the Poonapple our invitation to enjoy all the fishin’ and good clean livin’ the Lowcountry has to offer. Part natural history, part whimsy, our Coastal Critter collection celebrates the wild Lowcountry denizens that punctuate our days with moments of awe and wonder. They remind us to look up and notice that the marshes and tidelands we love have a rhythm and drama all their own.
